The Jersey Giant is an American breed of domestic chicken known for its massive size, calm temperament, and utility as both a meat and egg-laying bird. Developed in the late 19th century, it is one of the largest chicken breeds in the world. Developed in the 1870s by John and Thomas Black in Burlington County, New Jersey. Bred to replace turkeys as large table bird, combining size with efficient meat production. The American Poultry Association (APA) officially recognized the Black Jersey Giant in 1922, followed by the White Jersey Giant in 1947.
