Fafnir the Embracer is a figure from Norse mythology, best known as a fearsome dragon, though he was originally a dwarf. His transformation into a dragon and the tale surrounding his greed and eventual demise are central to the myth of Fafnir. Fafnir was initially a dwarf and the son of the dwarf king Hreidmar, known for his strength and aggressive nature. He had two brothers, Regin and Otr. The family plays a significant role in the mythology surrounding the cursed treasure known as the Andvari’s gold. Fafnir’s transformation into a dragon is tied to the treasure cursed by the dwarf Andvari. The myth begins when the god Loki accidentally kills Otr (Fafnir's brother), who had taken the form of an otter. To atone for this, Loki, along with the gods Odin and Hœnir, agrees to fill the skin of Otr with gold as compensation for the death. Loki gathers this gold from Andvari, a dwarf who lived as a fish in the waterfall. Andvari, when forced to surrender his treasure, curses the gold, saying it would bring death and destruction to whoever possessed it. After receiving the treasure, Fafnir’s greed consumes him. He kills his father, Hreidmar, to claim the treasure for himself, ignoring any loyalty to family. Over time, his intense greed causes him to transform into a dragon, a symbol of his insatiable desire to guard the hoard of gold.
